A pond is stored rain.
On the coast the rain comes hard, then the summer goes dry. A well thins out. A garden still needs water. A fire needs somewhere to draw from. This one holds about 2.8 million litres of rain and runoff that used to leave the property. That is a multi-year irrigation reserve, and a draw point that still works when the open water is low.

It sits in the low ground below the house, about 100 feet across and 18 to 20 feet deep, where the water already wanted to collect. The white rings are the useful part. Water settles, passes through crushed rock, and the pump draws from inside the rings. Clear water for the garden. A place a fire crew can reach even in a dry August.

The machine cuts the pond and shapes the land around it in the same pass. The banks are sloped so they hold. The ground beside the hole is built up so surface water runs toward the pond instead of past it.

Topsoil comes off first and is saved. The clay underneath is not trucked away. It is spread into the low spots and used to build the contours that feed the pond. Then the topsoil goes back on, the banks are seeded with coastal grass, and reeds go in the shallows to help filter the water.

At the bottom is a trench packed with crushed rock. Mud settles there before the water reaches the rings. That is why the draw stays clean, and why it still flows when the pond is drawn down.

Nothing left the site. The hole became the shape of the land. Rain fills the pond. What you don’t irrigate stays, and the ground around it stays wetter through the dry months.

Another one, still early.
Same order of work, on open pasture. Strip the topsoil, dig where the water gathers, keep every load on the property. The banks are still bare. Rain is already in it.

What is this water for?
Why dig one
Dry months. A pond holds the winter rain for the summer, instead of a well that runs thin in August.
The garden. You pump clear water from the rings, and on the right site it can feed downhill on its own.
Fire. A draw point on the property that still works when the pond is at its lowest.
The land. The soil stays and is shaped so more rain finds the pond. The banks grow in and hold.
